Hey, everyone, so the Summer 2019 movie season is officially kicking off next week with a certain movie that I’m going to mention in this list!  I figured it would be fun to talk about 10 movies I’m excited to see this Summer.  Let’s start:

Honorable Mention – “Dark Phoenix” – June 7

Okay, technically there are 11 movies on this list, but I had to mention “Dark Phoenix” because OMG this movie looks like a trainwreck.  It somehow looks like it’s going to mess up the Phoenix Saga more than “X-Men: The Last Stand” and that’s saying something.  I love this cast, but I feel like Jean Grey’s big comics story hasn’t been earned simply because we haven’t seen enough of her character.

10. “The Lion King” – July 19

So I don’t really get excited with reboots and remakes in general, especially if the original is a classic.  However, if anyone could pull it off, it’s director Jon Favreau, who did the 2016 live-action “Jungle Book” remake.  I guess Disney is calling this a live-action film despite the fact that the entire thing is just really realistic CGI, but whatever, it’s their call.  I’m mainly interested in this just because I like the cast.  You have Donald Glover, Beyonce, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen, and Billy Eichner.

9. “Aladdin” – May 24

I always liked the original Aladdin.  Robin Williams’ vocal performance is iconic and I think no one should even attempt to top that.  When I heard Disney was making a live-action “Aladdin” remake starring Will Smith as the Genie, I cringed, but then I thought he could add his own spin on the character.  Smith is a charismatic actor who has a pretty huge range of believable emotion so if he gives is 100%, he could be a worthy successor to the original.  Then I saw that first trailer.  I took it all back.  He looks like a Na’vi had a kid with Shrek and I was horrified.  The second trailer looked slightly better (this is the one I posted above) so whatever, I’ll give it a shot.

8. Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw – August 2

Guys, guys, guys, come on, you know this is gonna be good.  It’s Fast and Furious embracing the most over the top aspects of the franchise without the super serious undertones about family that Vin Diesel manages to squeeze in the seemingly ten page script.  The Rock and Jason Statham.  Idris Elba plays a bad guy dude with literal superpowers.  Like come on, yes.  Please.

7. “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” – May 31

I love how this movie just looks like it’s trying to say, “Screw it, let’s just put all the monsters in this one.”  It really makes the inner movie fan in me happy.  Even if this movie is bad, I know there’s going to be a ton of fan service.  My guess is this is going to be some kind of Godzilla: Battle Royale Fortnite Mode, but that’s all I want.  I want to see as much CG collateral damage as possible.  I know that sounds awful, but come on this is the one case in which it probably works.  I’m personally excited because the Michael Dougherty (“Trick ‘r Treat,” “Krampus”) project not only looks visually impressive, but also seems to feature a lot more monster action than the first film did.  We get to see Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and even King Ghidorah collide in this film, and this is rare “anti-Man-of-Steel” case where I just want to see as much destruction as possible.  I want these monsters to punch each other for the whole movie.

6. Spider-Man: Far From Home – July 2

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is a gift from the comic book gods (Rest in Peace, Stan Lee), wonderfully portraying the best version of Spider-Man we’ve seen on the big screen yet.  The more I see “Homecoming,” the more I love it as Jon Watts directorial style makes for a charming small scale adventure-comedy with little details you can appreciate with more watches.  I’m excited to see Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio since he’s one of my favorite actors and the character is one of my favorite Spider-Man villains ever.

5. “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” – May 17

Keanu Reeves returns as the titular John Wick in this third installment by director Chad Stahelski.  My guess is it has to do with the contract at the end of “Chapter 2” and now Wick is on the run from literally every hitman ever.  The film also stars Halle Berry, and I don’t know anything else about this.  I’m still sold.  It’s John Wick.  The man killed three dudes with a pencil.

4. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” – July 26

I don’t think I’d like Tarantino as a person especially after the allegations against him last year came out.  However, there’s no denying that he’s a brilliant filmmaker.  This is his ninth film, and the man is only making ten of them ever so I’m guessing he’s going to go all out for his penultimate release.  The film has an all-star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, and James Marsden.  It’s set in 1969 Los Angeles during the Manson murders so I think there’s a lot in Hollywood during that time to play with.

3. “Toy Story 4” – June 21

It’s “Toy Story.”  You better not forget your box of tissues for this one because if the past is any indication, there’s gonna be a lot of tears and sniffles.  The film is supposedly a road trip comedy with Woody and the gang meeting a new toy, Forky.  All your beloved characters are returning.  I don’t need to sell you on this.

2. “Pokemon Detective Pikachu” – May 10

IT LOOKS SO ADORABLE!!!!!  I have wanted to see a live action Pokemon movie my whole life, and the visual effects look incredible!  I’m a massive fan of the game and anime, and Ryan Reynolds seems to be having a great time voicing Pikachu.  I just want a really colorful, exciting, and fun adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously by getting bogged down with lore or backstory/exposition.

1. “Avengers: Endgame” – April 26

You don’t need me to sell you on this.  Obviously I would have this up there, and the top spot was really close so I just sort of had to randomly pick one over the other.  I’m equally excited for both of them.  “Endgame” is the culmination of everything that came before, and I don’t see how you cannot get excited for this if you’ve been following the MCU for at least the past couple of films.  I was 9 when “Iron Man” came out, and I’ve been invested in this ride since the beginning.  This is the movie I used to only dream of happening, and I can’t wait to see how it all ends.
