ERMAHGERD EVERYONE, THE LAST JEDI TRAILER CAME OUT!!! If you haven’t seen it already, here it is:
I KNOW RIGHT, IT’S FREAKING AMAZING! After seeing it about twenty times, I figured I’d seen enough to dive deep into what this trailer means. Here is my breakdown of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Teaser Trailer.
The trailer opens with a shot of Rey gasping for air, and this is probably due to her extensive Jedi training (courtesy of Luke Skywalker). Luke had to do flips with Yoda on his back so I’m curious to see if Luke and Rey are going to do anything similar (I really hope not for Daisy Ridley’s sake).
Here is a great shot of Ahch-To, the planet at the end of The Force Awakens (the one that Luke has been hiding in). Director Rian Johnson chose to use the Skellig Islands in Ireland as the filming location for Ahch-To. As we see shots of Ahch-To, we hear some wise words from Luke as he says “Breathe. Just breathe.”
Here is presumably another shot of Rey in training. I can’t really say much here except days and nights exist.
This is similar to what Luke did in Empire Strikes Back with Yoda (upside down lifting rocks). Luke asks Rey, “What do you see?”
We get a brief shot of what seems to be General Leia Organa (rest in piece Carrie Fisher) as Rey says the word “Light.”
Next, we see an awesome shot of Kylo Ren’s broken helmet after Rey says, “Darkness.” I thought that helmet was incinerated in the destruction of Starkiller Base, but I guess that thing really pulled through.
Now here’s where this trailer get’s interesting as Rey says “the balance.” I had a feeling that this film would delve deep into the balanced area of the Grey Jedi.
This shot gives more insight into what The Last Jedi could be: an exploration of the balance between two extremes. Think about it, Luke has seen his father turn from religious extremes – Anakin goes from a Jedi to a Sith and then he just joins the light side in the end. He doesn’t die a Jedi or a Sith; he’s just Anakin Skywalker, someone who has both light and darkness in him. Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo (Luke’s nephew) is also someone who Luke saw travel away from the Jedi “religion” (I know it’s not really a religion, I’m just using the word because I can’t think of anything else to use so calm down fanboys/fangirls). I know Kylo Ren isn’t good, but he still moved away from the idea of a Jedi or a Sith. Maybe Luke has moved on from the Jedi and the Sith and now he just sees things as light and dark. This is also supported by Luke’s response to Rey: “is so much bigger.”
Now we get this really cool shot of these speeders marking red power along an open space. I don’t know about you, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this frame was the pod race from The Phantom Menace, which is awesome since I always thought that was one of the best things from the prequels. If you fast forward to the next frame (also a shot of these racing things), you can see they’re racing towards what look like AT-ATs.
YAY, it’s Finn, the coolest ex-stormtrooper around. I don’t know what he’s in, but I hope he’s not in one of those speeders in the shot before. If he is, maybe those speeders could be for medical transport Finn was unconscious when we last saw him. Another option could be that an unconscious Finn is part of a sporting event in which people race unconscious people.
Next, we see that “one hell of a pilot,” Poe Dameron. Who’s he with? Oh, I don’t know, just his badass of a droid friend BB-8. Why are they running? I don’t know.
Whatever it is, it’s surely not good considering that’s Poe’s special X-Wing. 😦
Next, we get a really cool glimpse of a dogfight featuring the BEST SHIP IN THE GALAXY, THE MILLENNIUM FALCON!!! The Force Awakens had an amazing dogfight scene in its first act so I’m really excited to see what this one will look like.
Here, we get a great shot of Rey running with a lightsaber and she looks angry. This is either a part of her training or she is getting ready for a battle with none other than…
… the BAMF himself, Kylo Ren. As a few people pointed out online, he has red eyes. I don’t know if that has to do with the reflection of the lightsaber or his dark side nature, but it’s a cool touch. He looks intimidating in this scene; he looks like he’s threatening someone with his lightsaber. This and the prior shot features Luke saying, “I only know one truth.” What truth?
Great shot of what seems to be Luke and R2 looking at a destroyed area. Could this scene be attached to Rey’s flashback in The Force Awakens when Luke puts his robotic hand on R2? In that flashback, there’s an orange glow and Luke has his hand on R2. Maybe this scene is a flashback to when Ben Solo killed all the Jedi who Luke was training. Perhaps this scene could explain why Luke exiled himself to Ahch-To. It’s a theory so feel free to let me know what you think in the comments section.
Here’s what’s probably the big space battle of the movie. Pretty much ever Star Wars movie has one, and they’re all fantastic so I’m really excited to see what this one will be like. This shot sets up Luke’s trailer-defining line…
“It’s time for the Jedi… to end…” YES! YES! YES! YES! YESSSSSS!!!!!!! The John Williams score builds and…
… BOOM, the horns, strings, and vocals RISE with a taste of the dark side.
What does Luke mean? I think this line just gives more durability to the theory that he’s now a Grey Jedi. First, he wore grey robes at the end of The Force Awakens. Next, in the last shot of the trailer, you only see a his silhouette. This could be symbolic of Luke being a silhouette of what he once was – a Jedi like his father before him. It’s fantastic imagery, and it’s indicative of the dark, Empire-Strikes-Back-nature of The Last Jedi. I honestly can’t wait until December 15, 2017 for this. I think Rian Johnson is more than capable of telling stories with multi-faceted characters (I absolutely loved Looper, and I think it’s one of the best original sci-fi films in the last ten years).
So that’s my breakdown of The Last Jedi trailer. What do you think about this trailer? Did you like it? Do you think any of the theories mentioned above have ground? Feel free to let me know in the comments section below. Thanks 🙂
