Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Teaser Trailer Analysis

Hello, readers, the Rogue One trailer is finally here after months of anticipation and Blugger is going to analyze all of it!  If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer so you can get caught up.

Gareth Edward’s Rogue One looks phenomenal.  It looks dark, complex, and just right.  Though it’s just a trailer, it reveals just enough for viewers to get excited.  NOTE: Rogue One isn’t Episode VIII.  Most people believe that this is Episode VIII because it says Star Wars on it, but Rogue One actually takes place between Episode III and IV.  It’s basically a movie of the opening crawl for Episode IV (which doesn’t sound grand, but this movie is going to be grand because it’s Star Wars – even the prequels were grand in presentation).

First let’s analyze this unique sucker:

The greenery really shows me that we should protect the environment.  Okay, I’ll admit it wasn’t funny.  Now let’s get to the real stuff.

Here we can see Jyn Erso, played by Oscar Nominee Felicity Jones.  The name itself sound very Star Wars-y.  She seems to be taken by Rebel troops to what seems to be…

A Jedi Temple?

The blue/green lines… Mon Mothma… is this Maz Kanata’s castle from The Force Awakens because it sure looks like it!  Also, the appearance of Mon Mothma is a nice tie in for what is to come.  Jyn Erso is shown being hired by a small rebellion that includes…

Diego Luna’s character, who is a rebel.  They have that Finn/Poe look so I’m guessing they’re going to become best friends within five minutes.

As Mon Mothma explains to us who Jyn is, we see Jyn being a badass by taking down a bunch of stormtroopers.

She’s also either working with someone or saving someone when she does this.  Either way, she’s a rogue rebel and that’s always a great type of character to mess with from a screenplay aspect.  She’s being hired by Mon Mothma to find a ton of information about…

A Star Destroyer?  What’s that thing in the background?  It’s the…

Death Star!  It’s refreshing to see the Death Star because it doesn’t look like it was made of CGI.  Maybe Gareth Edwards decided to make the Death Star the same way A New Hope did it.  Now that I think about it, the Star Destroyer above also didn’t look like it was made of CGI so that’s awesome!

Here we can see that the rebels are probably getting ready for the cool war on the beach that we’ll see in a bit.  Don’t forget to to wear those helmets – those AT-ATs can be real pains if you don’t have them.

Next we see Ben Mendelsohn’s character, who is clearly a rebel.  Just look at those clothes and the very kind face that he has on…  Okay, I think that Mendelsohn is a perfect choice to play the “Grand Moff Tarkin” character in this movie.  He’s a fantastic actor who adds a serious and restrained tone to every one of his roles.  As someone who is highly ranked in the Empire, he needs to be restrained to an extent or else he will be killed by Darth Vader.  I would be surprised if Mendelsohn is Tarkin himself because he doesn’t really look like him, but Tarkin was also restrained right before he died when Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star in Episode IV.

Here we can see more stormtroopers (including some cool ones in the back) and Forest Whitaker’s character.  I just love this part because it shows that the movie isn’t going to be glossy and that it’s going to be rugged and gritty.

Here is another picture of Forest Whitaker and he looks like he’s been through war.  Maybe he was an ex-Stormtrooper working for the empire or maybe he’s been a rebel ever since the Empire was created.  Whatever his backstory is, he’s clearly been through something and knows how to work his way around the Empire.

I just put this picture in because it has these beige colored trooper suits.  Maybe those are the scouts of this movie and that suit is a prototype suit.  Yesterday, I talked about the presence of what seem to be shadow troopers in this movie and it’s nice to see these new suits in the trailer as well.  All of these troopers are chasing Jyn her crew as they appear to infiltrate the Death Star itself so that they could retrieve the Death Star plans and send them back to Mon Mothma and Leia Organa.

Now this part is just awesome.  Donnie Yen of Ip Man fame looks like a total badass in this scene.  He’s just walking with a bow staff of sorts and is just getting ready to take all of these dudes out.  I personally love Donnie Yen as an actor and I can’t wait to see what he does in this movie.

In this scene, we see Mendelsohn’s character walk through a D-Day-esque battlefield, which is badass.  So far, all the characters look fantastic.  I like how Mendelsohn’s character is doing this because Tarkin never did something like this.  Tarkin never actually walked on any of the battlefields (unless this is Tarkin, which would be cooler since this would be Tarkin in his prime).

The Emperor’s Royal Guards?  A chamber of sorts?  A black suit?  A cape?  This could either be Vader or the Emperor/Sidious.  The head could either be Vader’s helmet or Sidious’s hood.  Since the Royal Guards are their, the scene probably has Vader going to Sidious for advice.

ARE THOSE AT-ATs?  WHAT!!!???!!!???  Here we can see Jyn and her crew on the ground of a beach running straight at a group of AT-ATs.  They aren’t running away.  Just picture that.  How scared would you be if you had to run towards an AT-AT?  This just shows how cool these characters are.  They aren’t afraid to do the job that no one can and they know that they might die, but they are going to fight back if that’s what it takes to bring down the Empire.

Here’s another shot of the AT-ATs and they look awesome!  They don’t look like they were made of CGI (since they are made of CGI, that’s some really good CGI) and they look scary.

Finally, we see Jyn Erso getting ready to infiltrate the Death Star as the trailer ends and the title card pops up.
